About the X-1 Rocket Plane:
Known to many as “Glamorous Glennis”, the X-1 Rocket Plane is well-known in aviation history. Shaped like a .50 caliber bullet, the X-1 was modified several times to increase the likelihood of a successful mission to “break” the sound barrier.
On October 14, 1947, the X-1 achieved that mission. Flown by World War II combat pilot Captain Chuck Yeager, the X-1 achieved Mach 1.06 (700 mph) and safely returned to Earth. Before breaking the sound barrier, Captain Yeager flew over sixty missions for the U.S. Army Air Corps (now known as the U.S. Air Force) in Europe. After being shot down over France, Yeager narrowly escaped German patrols and returned after the war to become a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force.
It is important to note that no one knew what would happen when the X-1 approached Mach 1 (the speed of sound). Although the X-1 had been designed to withstand extreme gravitational pressure, nothing was known about the effect of reaching this speed on the human body. Launching from the bomb bay of a B-29 bomber, the X-1 and Captain Yeager would prove that it was possible to travel faster than the speed of sound. This event would fuel the production of supersonic aircraft, forever changing the nature of warfare. The X-1 now resides in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
