About the World War II 4x4 – ¼ Ton Truck:
As warfare advanced into the Twentieth Century the mechanization of the battlefield also progressed. The horse and cart, used for centuries to move men and supplies across the landscape, were now replaced by four-wheel drive trucks that moved millions of tons of gear, supplies, and men across North Africa, Europe, and Pacific islands to help the Allied cause in World War II. Of all the vehicles used during World War II, none were as synonymous with the war than the quarter ton 4x4 truck. The quarter ton truck was as essential to the war effort as was the GI’s M1 Garand that U.S Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall stated was “America’s greatest contribution to modern warfare.” High praise for such a simple truck.
On the islands of the Pacific, the 4x4 truck proved to be every bit of its worth. The trucks moved men and supplies across adverse landscapes to help push back the Japanese. Their smaller size and 4x4 capability meant they were everywhere. Many of these remote Pacific islands had dirt paths and barely discernible roads—a perfect situation for the ubiquitous truck. They could be easily transported from ship to shore and in places like Guadalcanal, they help to turn the tide of war in the Pacific.
