About the USCG HH-65 Dolphin – Search and Rescue Helicopter:
The adaptable MH-65 Dolphin helicopter enables the U.S. Coast Guard to undertake missions ranging from search and rescue and medical evacuation to armed security patrols and marine environment protection. Although introduced in the 1980s, the Coast Guard’s Dolphins stay up to date with frequent avionics upgrades, the addition of higher performance engines, increased weight-carrying capabilities, and its distinctive 10-blade low-noise Fenestron tail rotors.
Typically operating short-range missions from shore bases, the Dolphin also deploys from Coast Guard cutters and ice-breakers. The four-man crew includes a pilot and copilot, a flight mechanic, and a rescue swimmer. For use on border patrol and military operations, the MH-65 carries a M240 machinegun and .50 caliber rifle, often used to stop speedboats during pursuits. The Dolphin’s versatility is heightened by its unique autopilot systems, allowing it to keep steady at only 50 feet above the water or follow set search patterns at night or through heavy weather.
