About the Universal Carrier Mk. II - WWII Armored Personnel Carrier

Adaptable to many roles, the Universal Carrier transported infantry, provided firepower, and scouted ahead. In the North African desert, its versatility and reliability was vital to the British 8th Army’s war of movement against the Desert Fox.

The driver and commander sat in the front compartment with a Bren gun, giving rise to the nickname ‘Bren Carrier.’ The back area carried crewmen, anti-tank weapons, mortars, radios, and gear. Enabling the Carrier’s useful speed and agility, the Ford V8 engine provided a 30mph top speed and the reliable suspension system allowed the driver to spin the Carrier in a tight circle by braking and accelerating the tracks on opposite sides. With close to 80,000 built by the end of the war, the Carrier was ubiquitous wherever Allied forces fought.
