Designed to be a mass produced main battle tank, the Soviet T-72S first entered service in 1973 as an alternative to the T-64. Equipped with a 125 mm smoothbore gun and a maximum fire rate of up to eight rounds per minute, the T-72A has been used by nearly 30 countries worldwide. During the Russo-Georgian War in 2008 a large number of T-72s were used by both sides, and in 2014 during the War in Donbass pro-Russian separatists also deployed T-72s, although the Russian Government claimed plausible deniability in regards to supplying the separatists with tanks and other military supplies.
