First entering production in 1967, the T-64A included several upgrades from the T-64, most notably the main gun and gill armor plating along with the side skirts. The 125mm D-81T gun packed quite a punch but also took up more space, as a solution the crew was reduced from four men to three and the T-64A was equipped with a mechanized autoloader capable of holding 28 rounds and firing eight shots per minute. This marked the first of the Soviet MBTs to make use of a mechanical autoloader.
