About the T-55 Mod 1963 Main Battle Tank:

In October 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise assault on the Israeli border during the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday. Initiating a conflict that became known as the Yom Kippur War. Their objective was to reclaim territory lost during the 1967 Six Day War and eventually move on to eliminate the Jewish State. The bulk of the Syrian armored forces was made up of stockpiled Soviet tanks, including a plethora of T-55s.

The T-55 was initially developed by the Soviets as a counter to the new American M60 MBT. While the chassis design mirrored that of its predecessors, the turret was completely redesigned. Also new was the incorporation of NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) defenses for the tank’s four-person crew. Still used by nearly 50 countries around the world, the T-55 takes its place as one of the most produced tanks of all time, with estimates surpassing 86,000 units.
