As the German army took on an increasingly defensive role in World War II, there was a great need for mechanized anti-tank vehicles for infantry and grenadier units. The SdKfz 251 mated with the very lethal 7.5cm Pak 40 L/67 made for an effective mobile anti-tank platform. The high velocity Pak 40 gun could destroy enemy tanks at long range while the relatively small size of the SdKfz 251 made it easy to conceal in an ambush position. This combination was known as the SdKfz 251/22 and was given priority production over the numerous other SdKfz 251 variants, with more than 1200 made during the war. The SdKfz 251/22 saw action on the Italian, Russian and Western Front campaigns.
The SdKfz 251 was Germany's most versatile and widely used armored halftrack vehicle of World War II, often referred to as the "Hanomag" after the manufacturer's name. The SdKfz 251 was used as the basis for more than 20 specialized vehicles, with the basic design going through several refinements throughout production history. The Ausf D model was the final late-war version, notable for it's boxy design that helped simplify the manufacturing process.
