About the Sd.Kfz 173 Jagdpanther:

Few in numbers, but deadly in impact, the Jagdpanther struck fear into Allied tankers in the forests of France and Belgium and the steppe of the Eastern Front. Production began in 1944 but was impeded by Allied bombings of factories, resulting in only about 400 Jagdpanthers entering service. These were hindered further by shortages of spare parts and inadequately trained crews. Despite these setbacks, Jagdpanthers proved deadly to enemy tankers.

Fewer than 20 Jagdpanthers faced the thousands of Allied tanks that rolled into the Normandy beachhead, but they made an immediate impression. Its armor was virtually impregnable, and its massive gun could pick off Allied tanks at range. Growing from an idea put forth by Adolf Hitler himself, the Jagdpanther combined the reliable and heavily-armored Panther tank chassis with the powerful Pak 43 88mm gun, arguably Germany’s most effective anti-tank weapon. The casemate’s frontal armor was 80-100mm thick and sloped an incredible 30 degrees, making it capable of deflecting enemy rounds even from close range. Together, these qualities formed perhaps the most formidable tank destroyer of the war.
