About the SBD Dauntless – American Dive Bomber:
Diving at a steep 80° angle while approaching speeds of 275 mph to precisely deliver a bomb to target, the United States Navy’s SBD Dauntless proved to be one of the most important aircrafts of the Second World War. Used by both the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, the Dauntless formed the attack element of the United States’ carrier air group. With a range of nearly 1,000 miles, the Dauntless could perform both scout and attack roles. To defend against enemy fighter attack, the dive bomber used two forward- mounted .50 caliber Browning machine guns and two aft- mounted .30 caliber machine guns that the gunner controlled. Its maneuverability and ability to absorb enemy fire gave the plane longevity until its retirement in 1944.
The SBD Dauntless performed key roles at the Battles of Midway and Guadalcanal in 1942. In these two pivotal moments, the US Navy and US Marine Corps altered the course of the war in the Pacific. At Midway, four squadrons of dive bombers attacked and sank or fatally damaged all four of the Japanese carriers. This was followed up by another successful carrier sinking during the Guadalcanal campaign. In total, SBDs sank six Japanese carriers, fourteen enemy cruisers, six destroyers, fifteen transports or cargo ships, and many smaller craft, cementing itself as one of the most successful planes of the war.
