About the Rescue Squad - L.A. County Paramedic Truck:
Nearly 100 years ago, Los Angeles County resident and the county’s first Forester and Fire Warden, Stuart Flintham, saw his vision become reality. LA County, at the time, was an area dotted with small, unincorporated communities—28 to be exact—that were in need of a unified, regional fire suppression and prevention team. In the early days, Flintham had at his disposal a loose volunteer system, made up of members from the surrounding communities. However, what he really needed was a better-staffed team and up-to-date fire-fighting equipment. For that, Flintham had to navigate a tough political landscape to give the department taxing power to raise funds. Eventually, through his hard work, determination, and persuasive prowess, Flintham was able to pass the needed legislation and receive petitions from all 28 communities to form a unified fire department. Thus, in 1924, the LA County Fire Department was established.
LA County is a large region tasked with everything from residential to wildfires, as well as search and rescue and standard EMS services. Specialty vehicles were needed to handle the many tasks at hand, some of them even iconic. One vehicle, in particular, has transcended past the borders of LA County. The 1972 Dodge D-300 was a hard-use utility truck that the LA County Fire Department transformed into a paramedic truck. This wasn’t a typical ambulance as seen today, but a rugged vehicle that aided in search and rescue, emergency medical, and fire suppression. The truck was outfitted with “state-of-the-art” radios, storage compartments, searchlights, and a light bar. Gear for every situation could be stowed onboard giving the truck and its crew tremendous versatility.
