About the PZL P.11c - WWII Polish Fighter:
September 1st, 1939, the German invasion of Poland. While there is much to understand that pre-dates the invasion, this event represents the formal beginnings of World War II. The Polish were not nearly as prepared as they should have been, but leadership felt their pact with France and Great Britain may deter German attack. That was not the case. Instead, the European nation was confronted by the might of the German war machine. Defending the country was an army that, from a technological standpoint, was vastly outgunned. Its tanks and small arms paled, and their air force was outnumbered. However, there was an unsung hero to the conflict, the nimble PZL P.11C fighter.
The P.11 has a very distinctive look, probably because of its gull-wing design. The P.11 was developed in the early 1930s by Polish company Panstowe Zaklady Lotnicze (National Aviation Establishments). And for a fleeting moment, the Polish monoplane fighter was the most advanced in use, however that was short lived. The plane was powered by the very respected Bristol Mercury radial engine which pushed the svelte plane to speeds of 230mph. Additionally the P.11 had a service ceiling of 31,170ft and a range of 503 miles. As a result of the gull wing design and open cockpit, the plane’s pilots maintained excellent combat vision. For armament, the fighter was given two—and later four—7.7mm machine guns. By the time of Germany’s invasion, the P.11 was the primary Polish fighter craft, with approximately 150 in various forms of combat readiness. The primary issue Poland faced was that many needed repair and maintenance, however, those parts were not readily available. But the P.11 held its own against the Nazi Luftwaffe. The Polish fighter’s inherent design gave it unique characteristics. These included better maneuverability, durable construction, a better climbing rate, and the ability take off from short and rough airfields. The P.11 shot down approximately 110 Nazi aircraft but lost a majority of their own. Sadly, the Poles could not stand up against the onslaught of the Germans, and later the Soviets.
