About the Panzerwerfer 42 – Half-Tracked Multiple Rocket Launcher:

The Panzerwerfer 42 provided Germany with a quick and versatile method to saturate enemy concentrations with a terrifying barrage of rockets. First appearing in late 1943, the Panzerwerfer sent rocket bombardments over a wider area than was capable with artillery, and the fast half-track enabled repositioning to escape the rockets’ tell-tale smoke trails. To the Allied soldiers engulfed in the smoke, debris, and terrifying whine of a Panzerwerfer 42 salvo, the shrill rockets quickly became known as ‘Moaning Minnies.’

Panzerwerfers arrived on the Western Front just before the D-Day landings. They initially fought in the defense of Caen and around the Orne River, but quickly were employed across the Normandy battlefield. The mobile rocket launchers subsequently supported German attacks during the Battle of the Bulge and attempted to defend Berlin in the final days of the war.
