About the Panzer II Ausf C – German Light Tank:
The small and quick Panzer II led Germany’s invading armies into Poland, Denmark, Norway, the Low Countries, and France. Although the more recognizable and powerful Panzer III and IV would eventually form the backbone of the armored divisions, the Panzer II was Germany’s most numerous tank in the early years of the Second World War.
In the 1930s, as Germany quietly rearmed, designers realized that the Panzer I was deficient and the Panzer III and IV were far from ready. The Panzer II was the stopgap measure, with more armor than its predecessor but less firepower than later tanks. The Ausf. C variant became the standard model through mid-1940, adding a commander’s cupola and thicker frontal armor that squared-off the tank’s previously curved shape. Still, its 14mm armor was insufficient against anti-tank guns and its 2cm autocannon was inadequate against tanks. Nevertheless, the Panzer II performed successfully in Europe and North Africa.
More than 150 Panzer IIs served in Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps, primarily in reconnaissance roles. The quick-firing autocannon shot armor-piercing rounds that proved useful against thinly- armored or soft-skinned enemy vehicles. Armed with a radio, crewed by three men, and with a top speed of 25mph and range of 120 miles, the Panzer II was an effective and valuable scout vehicle for Rommel’s style of rapid maneuver warfare. Although outclassed, the Panzer II served throughout the war and was adopted for new uses. The Panzer II’s most famous derivative was the Marder II, a successful tank hunter formed with a Panzer II chassis and a German or captured Soviet anti-tank gun.
