About the Panzer 38 (t) Ausf. E/F – WWII German Light Tank:

In 1939 and 1940, the Panzer 38(t) charged across Europe in Germany’s combined-arms Blitzkrieg invasions of Poland, Denmark, and France. Well-suited for this period of ‘lightning war,’ the Panzer 38(t) was mobile and light but reliable and heavily armed. By 1941, it was outclassed by heavier tanks, but it had served its role in Germany’s rapid conquest of western Europe.

Originally designed as a light tank for the Czech army, the Panzer 38(t) was adopted by Germany upon the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. The next year, it formed a major part of the armored spearhead sweeping through the Low Countries and into France. In the Battle of France, its speed allowed it to exploit gaps in the French defenses, and its small size and mobility enabled it to outmaneuver the slower and heavier French tanks. The Panzer 38(t) carried a 37mm cannon, greater firepower than other German tanks, which proved effective against many early-war French and British tanks. Nevertheless, its strength lay in its numbers and mobility, not its firepower.

By the end of the battle, the Panzer 38(t) had served as a workhorse of the German Panzer divisions, contributing to the quick collapse of French defenses, but it would soon be overpowered by the rapid advancement of tank design in the Second World War.
