About the Pak 40 Bunker – WWII German Normandy Defense:
On the eve of D-Day, thousands of fortified bunkers dotted the Normandy coast of France, awaiting the Allied invasion. Since 1942, the Atlantic Wall became increasingly formidable as the number of these bunkers proliferated. With more than 600 approved designs, the bunkers featured armored air intakes, reinforced concrete roofs, steel doors over an inch thick, and communications systems. Most importantly, the bunkers bristled with artillery, machine guns, mortars, and anti-tank guns.
Nestled in numerous coastal bunkers, 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank guns greeted Allied landing craft and armored vehicles as they hit the beaches on D-Day. Entering service in 1942, the Pak 40 became Germany’s primary anti-tank gun, with more than 20,000 produced by the end of the war. Replacing the outdated Pak 38, the Pak 40 featured a simplified flat gun shield and, made of steel, was much heavier. The decreased mobility made it well-suited for use in fixed fortifications, and the gun remained deadly to Allied tanks through the end of the war.
