About the Opel Blitz Omnibus - WWII German Troop Transport:

Mobilizing infantry is a difficult task, one that military commanders put much time and thought into. Before Germany embarked on its Blitzkrieg campaign to capitalize on Hitler’s promise of Lebensraum, they needed to conquer the logistical feat of moving men and material over a vast landscape. While in the past, mobilization was either by foot or horse but in the 1930s and 1940s this transitioned to trucks and other automobiles. At the time, the Opel Blitz was the most popular German truck and formed the backbone of Germany’s logistical core. More than that, the Opel Blitz proved to be a great foundation for specialized vehicles used by the German military. Enter the Opel Blitz Omnibus.

The Omnibus is quite literally a bus body built onto an Opel Blitz chassis. However, the chassis did receive some enhancements that mainly involved reinforcing the metal crossmembers and slightly elongating the cassis to support the bus superstructure. The Omnibus has a rather distinguished look but maintains the same radiator design as the Opel Blitz truck as well as its very distinctive logo. Inside the bus lay a series of benches for passengers that could easily be removed for the flexibility of transporting bulk goods. The production of the Omnibus coincided with Germany’s invasion of Poland and the official start to the Second World War. Initially, production numbers were small, with maybe one hundred coming off the assembly line a month. As the war progressed those numbers increased. The Germans eventually began modifying the base design to ease the manufacturing process. This helped, but as the war waned, production ceased as natural resources dried up. The Germans needed tanks and guns more than troop busses. Overall, several thousand were built and used across Europe. While they were used in their primary role of moving men, many were converted to be used as mobile command centers, radio stations, mobile bakeries, and laundries, as well a sort of ambulance to move wounded to hospitals.
