About the MXY-7 Ohka – Kamikaze Attack Aircraft:

The Japanese MXY-7 Ohka (Cherry Blossom) suicide bomb was the ultimate development of the sinister Japanese Special Attack Corps. Built from wood and “non-critical” metals, the Ohka was designed to be mass produced by unskilled labor. The initial version of the Ohka contained a 1200kg warhead and was designed to be transported in the bomb bay of a Navy Type 1 Attack Bomber (Model 24J), where it glided to its target upon release from the parent craft. Due to the short range of the Ohka and the proximity the bombers had to fly to the intended target, later models were outfitted with rocket and turbojet engines (the model 11 and 22 respectively) to increase range.

Approximately 755 of the rocket-powered Ohkas were built between September 1944 and March 1945. The first successful hit of an Ohka was on the USS West Virginia on April 1, 1945. The first ship destroyed was the destroyer USS Manert L Abele, off Okinawa on April 12, 1945. The lack of suitable carrier aircraft to deliver the Ohkas meant that many could not break through the Allied fighter screen. To defeat this aerial blockade, the Japanese were in development of a long-range Ohka that could be catapulted from a surfaced submarine, but the war ended before it could be used.
