About the M551 A1 Sheridan – Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle:

Like the Civil War cavalry general it was named for, the Sheridan tank was capable of crossing rough terrain quickly and bursting onto the battlefield. The M551 Sheridan AR/AAV (Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle) was light and compact enough to be transported by aircraft and landed by parachute, and had amphibious capabilities allowing it to ford rivers. Its chassis was based on the tough M60 Patton tank, but with a smaller and lighter build. Despite its light weight, the Sheridan had a fully stabilized turret and could engage both ground and airborne targets. It carried an advanced armament, equipped with a 152mm gun/launcher capable of firing both conventional shells and the MGM-51 Shillelagh guided missile, giving the Sheridan a unique versatility in combat situations.

The Sheridan rushed into service in the 1960s and saw extensive use in the Vietnam War. However, the Sheridans were plagued by reliability issues. In the opening days of Desert Storm, Sheridan M551A1 variants were air landed in Saudi Arabia to enter the fight quickly. Used primarily in a reconnaissance role, the Sheridans nonetheless were engaged in tank-on-tank combat and performed well.
