About the M163 VADS - Vulcan Air Defense System:

Incorporated with the chassis of the M113 APC, the M163 VADS could reach areas that were previously inaccessible to wheeled systems of similar style and function. The firepower of the M61 Vulcan Gatling cannon makes the M163 a valuable anti-aircraft asset and its ability to fire a variety of ammunition allowed it to easily adapt to unique combat scenarios. During Desert Storm, the VADS was rarely needed to provide defense against aerial threats. However, the Vulcan gun system was in use throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s primarily as a ground support weapon.
