About the M1278 Heavy Guns Carrier – Joint Light Tactical Vehicle:
Mobility across a landscape is key to survival. The way soldiers move through battle-scapes has changed overtime and has led to some of the most sophisticated equipment of the modern day. With today’s advantages, soldiers are better protected against a host of threats. Not only are they protected, but they have off-road capabilities never seen before. This is all thanks to the latest innovation, the Oshkosh Defense Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV. The JLTV family of vehicles is a joint-service program designed to replace portions of each service’s light tactical wheeled vehicle inventory. This Army-led program fills a capability gap between current vehicles. The JLTV provides the soldiers with upgraded protection, increased mobility, and a larger payload when compared to the HUMVEE. Likewise, the JLTV has better off-road mobility, fuel efficiency, and reliability when compared to heavier IED protected all-terrain vehicles.
What makes the JLTV unique is its use of Oshkosh’s patented TAK-4i intelligent independent suspension system. This system gives the JLTV up to 20” of usable wheel travel and a self-leveling Suspension Aided Egress System (SAES) when parked on uneven slopes. Also, the JLTV is easily transportable by air via rotor or fixed-wing aircraft (namely CH-47, CH-53, C-130, C-5, and C-17). While the vehicle possesses superior mobility compared to others in its class, the JLTV also offers unprecedented crew protection that is scalable to unique mission sets. This includes blast protected seats, an automatic fire protection system, and bolt-on crew protection systems. For lethality, the JLTV can host a plethora of weapons systems. These include anything from M2HB machine guns, remote operated weapons systems, as well as anti-tank and anti-air missiles. Finally, the JLTV can achieve speeds of 70mph thanks to its Gale Banks Engineering 866T 6.6-liter diesel engine (which is based on the GM Duramax engine). The JLTV is truly a “plug-and-play” system that is highly adaptable. Current versions include General Purpose (GP), Heavy Guns Carrier (HGC), Utility (U), and Close Combat Weapons Carrier (CCWC).
