About the M1240A1 M-ATV with CROWS II – MRAP - All Terrain Vehicle:

Building upon the time-tested need for an armored all-terrain vehicle, the Oshkosh Defense MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) fits that need. The M-ATV is a base platform that is custom configured to fit the needs of the specific mission. Replacing the Vietnam-era M113 APC, Oshkosh built a vehicle that can handle mud, snow, sand, deep water, and temperatures that range from -26F to 130F. To tackle the adverse terrain, the M-ATV uses independent suspension that gives the vehicle 16” of ground clearance. The vehicle is also rather efficient—it has a cruising range of 310 miles. Of course, an armored vehicle must protect its crew. The M-ATV was specifically designed to handle the threats of the modern battlefield, including improvised explosive devices (IED). The M-ATV comprises of a fully armored crew compartment with blast seats for the driver, commander, and passengers. Additionally, information is key for tactical success, with that Oshkosh has delivered the C4ISR systems to the M-ATV family. This gives the commander and crew communication with other unit forces, situational awareness to their surroundings, advanced navigation, and access to advanced weapons stations like the CROWS 2.

One configuration of the M-ATV is the Special Forces version. While outwardly like the others, the Special Forces variation has advanced electronics to keep operators plugged into command and to increase situational awareness on the battlefield. The crew cab can hold five soldiers while the stowage bay can hold the special equipment needed to carry out the advanced missions of U.S. Army Special Forces. The Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) offers protection for the crew while being remotely operated. The weapons station contains a suite of sensors and fire-control software that allows the controller to take precise shots while stationery or on the move. CROWS supports various weapons including MK 19 grenade launcher, M240B machine gun, M249 SAW, and of course, the venerable M2 .50 caliber machine gun.
