About the M1078 LMTV – Cargo Truck:

The Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) is a highly mobile and adaptable utility truck for the United States military. Introduced in the 1980s, the LMTV line replaced the older M809 series of trucks. During the procurement process, the Department of Defense (DoD) was looking for a vehicle that could handle a wide variety of terrain, that was standardized for ease of maintenance and could adapt to a variety of missions. The M1078 is just that. These trucks use interchangeable components and systems that can be easily replaced or fixed in the field, streamlining the maintenance process, and making it easier for logistic personnel. Prototypes rolled off the assembly line in 1984, and after exhaustive testing, were approved for full production in 1989. Upon inspection, the United States quickly ordered 35,000 to be delivered over a five-year period.

Since its initial arrival, the LMTV lineup has proved invaluable in numerous logistical roles. It has gone through several design changes and overall upgrades as advancements were made. Even still, the truck has proved indispensable. The LMTV line has been used in capacities such as troop transport, cargo transport, ambulance, and command and control. However, the base M1078 AR1 is the most prolific. The base model is a 2.5-ton cargo truck that is designed to haul gear and supplies across the battlespace. The truck can haul up to 5,000 pounds of cargo with relative ease in adverse conditions. To aid in the debarkation of gear, the side rails of the bed are on hinges that can be folded down offering better access. A canvas and bows kit can be added to further protect cargo or troops from the elements. To power the truck, a 225hp diesel engine is utilized with 4x4 capability with locking differential and an automatic transmission. The cab design sits over the engine and has room for three soldiers. The truck can also fit snugly inside a C-130, meaning the trucks can be airlifted anywhere in the world. Logistics are the backbone of any military. The M1078 and others in the LMTV family give flexibility and an overwhelming logistical advantage.
