About the M10 Wolverine GMC – WWII Allied Self-Propelled Anti-Tank Gun:

Wedding a powerful gun with speed and agility, the Gun Motor Carriage (GMC) M10 was the primary American tank destroyer of the Second World War. Nicknamed ‘Wolverine’ by Chrysler, the M10 was designed to take on massed enemy tank attacks. Built on the reliable M4 Sherman chassis and carrying a hefty 3-inch gun, the Wolverine could take on formidable tanks, and its top speed of 30 mph provided the speed to maneuver and make an escape. The tank destroyer had sloped but light armor and relied on this agility for defense, designed specifically for hit-and-run tactics against enemy armor.

Debuting in Tunisia, the M10 was used primarily in the European Theater, notably in the Normandy campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. Wolverines proved effective tank destroyers and were used in close coordination with infantry units. The open-topped turret design allowed for better visibility for the crew and improved maneuverability, but it also exposed the crews to shrapnel and sniper fire. The M10 eventually was replaced by the up-gunned M36 tank destroyer, but the M10 remained a valuable asset in combat through the end of the war.
