About the M1 Light Tractor – US Navy Seabees Bulldozer – Brickmania Classic Series:

As the Allies island-hopped across the Pacific in the Second World War, Naval Construction Battalions labored outside the limelight to enable the continued advance from each small island toward Japan. Known as the Seabees, these units were construction workers in combat, with the motto “We build, we fight.” They built and maintained airstrips, ports, roads, hospitals, and bases, often under enemy fire. The Seabees’ ability to rapidly build this vital infrastructure was critical to allowing the Allied forced to maintain momentum and logistics.A vital piece of the Seabees’ toolkit was the tractor. Often tasked with constructing an airfield, clearing explosives, or building a road under fire, the Seabees turned to their tractors first. The robust and versatile tractors had diesel engines, giving the strength necessary for operating in tough terrain like jungles and swamps and hauling heavy loads and grading land. The Seabees’ tracked tractors provided a stable base, allowing work over soft and uneven ground. The tractor’s reliability, combined with the Seabees’ engineering skills, made it an indispensable asset in the Allied war effort.
