About the LSSC – Light SEAL Support Craft:

A century after gunboats won control of the Mississippi River in the American Civil War, the US Navy once again formed a brown-water navy to win control of inland waterways in Vietnam. The Mekong River, one of the largest river systems in the world, offered a highway for enemy troops and supplies, but the brown-water navy stopped almost all movement on the river from 1965 to 1970. Initially using converted landing craft or outdated vessels inherited from the French, the US riverine forces needed purpose-built boats for their unique mission.

A valuable tool for the brown-water navy was the Light SEAL Support Craft. The LSSC was light, fast, and heavily armed. With two 350hp engines powering water-jet propulsion, the shallow craft skimmed over the water at over 30 knots. The boats carried light armor and M60 and M2 machine-guns, vital for protecting the boat and crew in the dense confines of the narrow waterways. The LSSCs carried highly trained and heavily armed Navy SEALs. In one of their earliest combat deployments, the SEALs fought a guerilla war in Vietnam, patrolling the inland waters and attacking deep in enemy territory.
