About the L3/35 – WWII Italian Tankette:

Often turretless and almost miniature in size when lined up next to a heavy tank, tankettes are members of an often forgotten and overlooked piece of armored history. During the inter-war period, strategists and engineers designed a tracked vehicle that could transport a couple of soldiers along with a machine gun into the battlefield. These, they thought, might help break the stalemate that dominated much of the Great War. However, in practical terms, they were less expensive and proved great as a training vehicle. Unfortunately, in the heat of combat, their larger contemporaries were more adept. Even still, many nations liked the idea of the tankette, and formed the bulk of their armored divisions around them. In this case, Italy.

Based off the British Carden-Lloyd Mk. VI, the Italian L3/35 or Carro Veloce CV-35, was adopted and heavily used by the Italian military during World War II. The L3/35 was categorized as a “fast tank” by their military, meaning it occupied a space that was typically given to armored cars. The small tanks used a two-man crew consisting of a driver and a commander, who also doubled as the gunner. The armor of the L3/35 varied from 6-12mm, which was fine against small arms fire, but against heavy machine guns or bigger, it could not handle and enemy fire tore through its thin skin. Originally outfitted with a single 6.5mm machine gun, the L3/35 received a substantial upgrade when two Breda 7.92 machine guns were added. A Fiat SPA CV3 6-cylinder engine powered the tankette giving it a max speed of 26mph and distance of 76 miles. Over 1,300 were produced by Italy. Its low cost made it attractive to smaller nations who needed to increase their armored strength. This included Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, as well as Hungary who built them under license. The Italian tankette saw Action in North Africa as well as Europe but was outdated and outmatched against the strength of Allied forces.
