About the Knight Tourer - WWI German Staff Car:
As automobiles replaced the horse and carriage as the main form of transportation, military commanders took to using staff cars for travel. Commanders often used customized, high-end vehicles for staff cars. The 1916 Mercedes 16/40 or “Knight Tourer” was the choice of vehicle for Kaiser Wilhelm II and other German commanders. This vehicle was state-of-the-art for the time. The “Knight” designation was in reference to the vehicle’s four-stroke Knight sleeve-valve engine. The use of staff cars provided commanders with a quick ride to and from the front. The commanding officer typically had a personal driver who always operated the vehicle.
