About the Kennedy Space Center ARFF–Striker 1950 Fire Truck
With man’s desire to explore space, specialized equipment is needed. Even with the most advanced technology, accidents happen. Quick response firefighters are on high alert during launches at the Kennedy Space Center. Of course, fires and accidents caused by space exploration vehicles require specialized firefighting equipment. At the front of any incident is the ARFF Striker 1950 Fire Truck.
The Striker Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle is a purpose-built machine for combating the volatile nature of aircraft fires. The ARFF is built using a fiberglass body and state-of-the-art command center with centerline steering and backlit control panel. A wraparound windscreen increases visibility for the five-man crew. The crew can control the roof and front bumper–mounted turrets from inside the cabin, shielding them from exposure. The ARFF uses both traditional water and foam tanks. Foam is essential for combating fires centered around jet fuel. Rounding out the vehicle’s specialized tools are a central tire inflation system, hydraulic generator, mechanical rear axle steering, and an air conditioning unit to keep the crew cool on a hot day. Kennedy Space Center is a specialized space vehicle launching facility, which requires equally specialized equipment to keep it safe.
