About the Ju 87D-1 Stuka – German Dive Bomber:

The sharp, distinct siren of a Junkers 87 Stuka is unforgettable. It is the sound that starts as the famed World War II German airplane begins its precise dive onto its target below. The Jericho-Trompete wailing siren was added to engage in psychological warfare to terrify the ground troops below. The “Stuka”—an abbreviation of Sturzkampfflugzeug—is one of the most famous dive bombers of the war. The Germans first experimented with the Stuka in blitzkrieg tactics during the Spanish Civil War of 1936. Its success and deadly accuracy confirmed the German’s strategy. The Stuka was used during the Third Reich’s initial conquest of Europe, softening enemy positions as Panzer units crossed the countryside.

The Ju 87 went through several versions over the course of the war, but the “D” model was the most prolific with over 3,600 built. Some upgrades over its predecessors included a powerful 1,400 hp Junker Jumo 211J engine. A better engine meant the Stuka could carry a larger bomb—up to a 2,650 lb one. Additionally, fuel capacity was increased. The Stuka was first built in 1935, however, by 1939, the aircraft was already outdated. For the Germans, the Stuka’s success coupled with a lack of alternative options meant the dive bomber was produced for the entirety of the war and saw action at every theater.
