HUMVEE® M1151A1 – USMC 4x4 with MCTAGS-R Turret:
The High-Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), or HUMVEE® to the rest of the world, is an American-designed, all-purpose vehicle that takes up the same mantle as the ¼ ton Jeep or Mutt that came before it. Tanks and fighters get all the glory, but it’s common use trucks that fulfill multiple roles that form the backbone of armies. In 1982, the Pentagon issued a $1 billion contract to AM General to develop a fleet of 55,000 high mobility vehicles. In 1985, the first production models were delivered. Troops referred to these early models as “Jeeps on steroids” because of their larger, 1 ¼ ton size. The versatility of the HUMVEE® vehicle was unprecedented. Their jobs ranged from troop and cargo carriers to ambulances, mobile tank killers, and infantry fighting vehicles with machine guns and grenade launchers affixed to their roofs. Because of the longevity of the HUMVEE®, they are also an icon. The military truck is instantly recognizable from film and video games. The HUMVEE® vehicles fall into the upper echelon of military vehicles, sharing the spotlight with things like the Jeep brand, Sherman, and Abrams tank.
With nearly forty years of service that include multiple official and unofficial conflicts, the newest iterations take everything learned from the past and bring it forward. The M1151A1 is the latest in HUMVEE® advancement by AM General. The company lists it as an Expanded Capacity Armament Carrier IAP/Armor Ready HMMWV. Meaning, this new version is mission adaptable and packs a bigger punch compared to previous models while also protecting its crew. Furthermore, AM General lists that “with the addition of the ‘B’ kit, the M1151A1 provides gapless mine and ballistic protection.” This is an important add-on in a world where IED attacks are expected. Mission flexibility is a requirement with the new M1151A1. The add-on kits and weapon systems can be easily switched out in the field, maximizing mission effectiveness. Crew comfort is also important, especially on long missions. Air conditioning was added for this reason.
The M1151A1 can traverse adverse terrain in harsh weather conditions thanks to its independent suspension and 6.8L turbocharged V8 engine. For armament, a Browning M2HB .50 caliber machine gun that has 360-degree traverse is common, though other weapon systems could be added depending on mission requirements. The M1151A1 pushes the envelope of the classic HUMVEE® design and gives the soldiers on the ground maximum mission flexibility.
