About the Ho 229 – Experimental Flying Wing:
One of aviation’s most futuristic designs, the Horten Ho 229 is a tail-less aircraft known as a flying wing developed by Germany in WWII. While the initial variant was a glider constructed from wood and cloth, the second variant was a jet-powered, single-pilot flying wing with a steel framework covered in a plywood skin. After a successful flight test of the second variant, it was established that a powered flying wing could be controlled in flight. Though it was never tested, it is speculated that the third Ho 229 would have flown farther than any aircraft of its day. As late as 2014, scientists were still trying to discover just how the Ho 229 creators managed to overcome the aerodynamic challenges that should have made it unflyable.
“Reimar Horten was on the right track. He never saw the full potential of his ideas. Yet I suspect if he could see where we are today, he would be pleased. Perhaps not so pleased by the pace of our progress, but that we are finally listening.” -Al Bowers, NASA
