The Field Bastion is a modern gabion, with the primary use being for flood control and military fortifications. They are made up of a collapsible wire mesh container and a heavy-duty fabric liner. Basic assembly requires unfolding and filling them with sand, soil, or gravel using a front-end loader. Much like a sandbag barrier, the placement is simple. One of the advantages of a Field Bastion barrier is the quick and easy setup. They are often used as a semi-permanent levee or blast wall against explosions or small arms. Recent uses of Field Bastions include areas of heavy conflict like Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as civilian use in flood control during Hurricane Katrina.
