About the Fairey Swordfish - Biplane Torpedo Bomber:
Responsible for the immobilization of the infamous Bismarck battleship, the Fairey Swordfish was a frontline attack aircraft for the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) of the Royal Navy. Though considered out of date by the start of WWII, it sank more tonnage than any other Allied plane and served throughout the entire war. Besides the critical role played in sinking the Bismarck, Fairey Swordfish aircraft also played a crucial part in the attack of the Italian port of Taranto, known as Italy’s Pearl Harbor. The aircraft was composed of a metal frame with fabric covers and was highly versatile. It was even nicknamed “Stringbag” after common shopping bags because of its ability to support a wide variety of loadouts. Adding to its versatility, the Swordfish was also able to fold its wings back to save space on aircraft carriers and could carry a 1,670 lb. (757 kg) torpedo – making it an excellent asset in antisubmarine operations.
