About the F1M2 “Pete” – WWII Japanese Naval Observation Seaplane:
In use throughout the Second World War, the Mitsubishi F1M2 floatplane grew into a versatile tool for the Japanese Navy. The F1M2 was designed in the 1930s as a naval observation plane, intended to catapult off warships, spot enemy targets, and provide eyes for the naval gunners. Meant for nearby reconnaissance, it nonetheless had a respectable range of 670 miles and a top speed of 230mph. It sported three floats, enabling it to land on the water to be retrieved by warships, and folding wings for storage aboard. These traits made the F1M2 a flexible aircraft, useful for far more than just gunnery spotting. The Japanese Navy put the F1M2 to use for convoy escort, anti-submarine patrols, and maritime rescue, as well as aerial combat and bombing missions.
Known by American aircraft spotters as “Pete,” the F1M2 was the Japanese Navy’s last biplane. The all-metal plane had a crew of two and was powered by a 875 hp Mitsubishi Zuisei radial engine. It carried three machineguns and, when needed, two 60kg bombs. The F1M2 “Pete” remained in production until 1944 and served the Japanese Navy throughout the Pacific.
