About the F-14D Tomcat™ – Supersonic Fighter Aircraft:

The iconic F-14 Tomcat did it all. Large, well-armed, and well-equipped, the supersonic and carrier-capable F-14 served as the U.S. Navy’s primary aircraft for air superiority, defense interception, and reconnaissance for three decades. The Tomcat debuted in the mid-1970s and flew over South Vietnam during the Fall of Saigon and, a few years later, shot down its first hostile aircraft, as it evaded missiles and fighters over Libya. Despite its large size, the F-14 was the primary tactical reconnaissance aircraft for the Navy, receiving frequent upgrades to both its weapons and imagery systems. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Tomcat fulfilled its air superiority role, performing Combat Air Patrols over sea and land in the Middle East.

The F-14 carried a 20mm 6-barrel M61 Vulcan rotary cannon, as well as hardpoints with a huge capacity for rockets, missiles, bombs, and reconnaissance systems. It had a crew of two and a top speed of 1,544 mph at altitude or 914 mph at sea level. It had a 38-foot swept wingspan, but when deployed, the wings extended an enormous 64 feet. The F-14D was the final variant, debuting in 1991. It featured advanced avionics, radar, tracking capabilities, and ejection seats. The very last F-14 built was Vandy 1, flying out of Naval Air Station Point Mugu, California.
