About the Bf-109E WWII Fighter:
The standard fighter of the Luftwaffe at the outbreak of World War II, the BF-109E (designated Emil) was a single seat plane equipped with two MG 17 machine guns, two 20mm MG-FF/m cannons, and a massive Daimler-Benz DB601 engine that gave the aircraft its signature elongated front. Expertly designed for short-range attacks, the Bf-109E was devastatingly effective in the German Blitzkrieg. As the war continued the limited range of the aircraft was seen as a major shortcoming. Before the addition of drop tanks in the E-7 variant, German pilots during the Battle of Britain were known to glide home on fumes, often making emergency landings in nearby fields and falling short of their home base.
