About the Bell® UH-1(H) Super Huey® – CAL FIRE Equipment:

The Bell® UH-1(H) Super Huey®, is a troop/cargo transport rotor craft that was used by the United States Army in Vietnam. Since then, it has been utilized in the civilian world for forest fire suppression. California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Air Operations first acquired 12 UH-1F Huey® helicopters in 1981 through the Federal Excess Personal Property program to help combat raging wildfires. By 1990, the F model was replaced with the H version. The Super Huey® is crewed by one pilot, two Helitack Captains, and up to eight personnel. To suppress fires, the UH-1(H) carries a bucket payload of 324 gallons of water/foam or up to 360 gallons of water/foam in a fixed tank.

California Fire’s Super Huey® helicopter's primary mission is to quickly respond to and attack wildfires. They do this by carrying a team of nine Helitack firefighters to insertion points to help stop the spread. The Huey® helicopters then quickly change to a fire suppression role by dropping “buckets” of water onto the flames. Super Huey® helicopters are also involved in various forms of search and rescue and use the HOIST program where specially trained firefighters are lowered from a hovering helicopter to a trapped or injured person below. Currently, California Fire employs twelve Super Huey® Helicopters across the state.
