About the Bell™ Boeing™ MV-22 Osprey™ – Tiltrotor Military Aircraft:

Spawned by a joint venture by aeronautic manufacturing giants Bell Helicopters and Boeing Helicopters, the MV-22 Osprey is a revolutionary aircraft that combines the vertical takeoff ability of helicopters with the endurance of fixed-wing planes. Debuting with the United States Marine Corps in 2007, Ospreys deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Libya, where their speed and range allowed troops and cargo to be transported far more quickly and farther than in traditional aircraft.

The MV-22 typically takes off as a helicopter, after which the tiltrotors rotate forward in only 12 seconds, converting the Osprey into a fast and fuel-efficient turboprop aircraft. The two Rolls-Royce engines provide such power and rotor-wash that the side doors usually are not used during flight, so the large rear door is used for drops, rappelling, and hoists instead. The MV-22 also features advanced avionics and computerized damage control systems. Ospreys may carry M240 or M2 machine guns on the rear loading ramp, and some aircraft are equipped with remotely operated, belly-mounted gun turrets. The MV-22 has proved crucial in both combat and humanitarian aid roles, earning the reputation as the safest plane in the USMC inventory.
