About the B-239 Buffalo – Pearl of the Northern Skies:
In the Second World War, the Brewster Buffalo was obsolete but successful. American-built and designed specifically as a carrier-based fighter, the Buffalo was the U.S. Navy’s first monoplane fighter, yet it was already outdated when war began. Although the Buffalo was overweight, unstable, and under-armored, the Finnish air force used the fighter with devastating success in the Winter War.
With war between Finland and the Soviet Union threatening in 1939, Finland appealed to the United States for modern combat aircraft. Part of an early production run of Buffalos, originally destined for the U.S. Navy, diverted to Finland. They arrived without guns, sights, and some instruments, but the Finns quickly prepared them for war. Finnish pilots initially considered the Buffalo underwhelming, but they learned that the fighters’ tight turning radius was a valuable advantage. When the Soviets invaded Finland, Finnish pilots flying Buffalos helped knock the attackers back. Later, during the Continuation War, Finnish ace Hans “Hasse” Wind claimed 39 of his 75 victories in the Buffalo.
