Background of the Avenger AN/TWQ-1 HMMWV
The Avenger is a mobile, short-range anti-aircraft system mounted on the M998 and M1097 HMMWV chassis. Its primary purpose is to provide mobile protection against cruise missiles, helicopters and low-flying fixed wing aircraft. It is armed with Stinger ground-to-air missiles plus a coaxial .50 cal M3P Machine Gun for secondary armament. The Avenger is equipped with built-in infra-red tracking system and laser range-finder, but can also be subordinated to fire on cue from the Forward Area Air Defense Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (FAAD C3I) system. The Avenger was first deployed during Operation Desert Storm and has subsequently been used by US forces in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. More than 1000 Avengers have been built since the late 1980's and several variants have been developed leading up to the modern day.
