In the American Civil War, the Louisiana Tigers, wearing bright and distinctive Zouave uniforms, earned a reputation as fierce, rowdy, and bold shock troops for the Confederate army. Raised in 1861, the Tigers quickly grew from a company to a battalion as recruits from across New Orleans society joined, creating a unit of former assemblymen, lawyers, dockworkers, thieves, and foreign mercenaries. The Tiger Battalion first tasted combat at the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas), before shipping west to take part in Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign. With the original unit depleted, the Tigers nickname came to signify an entire brigade of Louisiana infantry.
Sent back east, the Tigers fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run, where they ran out of ammunition but repulsed Union infantry with a hail of rocks. The name came to refer to all Louisiana infantry fighting with the Army of Northern Virginia, and the Tigers fought at key battles such as Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Petersburg, Spotsylvania, and Appomattox.
