About the A.E.G. G.IV – German Bomber Aircraft:

Built by Allgemeine Elektrizitäts Gesellschaft, the A.E.G. G. series was an early pioneer of metal aircraft construction. The G.IV, introduced in 1917, was used primarily as a short-range nighttime bomber that operated near the front lines. Manned by a crew of three—pilot, observer, and rear gunner—the G.IV’s crew was outfitted with electrically heated suits, while the plane itself used radios for increased communication.

The bomber was a twin-engine design with its engines outboard of the fuselage, but within the upper and lower wing assemblies. Power was supplied by two Mercedes D.IVa 6-cylinder engines that produced 260 hp each. The G.IV had a top speed of 103 mph and a ceiling of 14,760 feet. The bomber carried 882 lbs. of externally held ordnance as well as two 7.92 MG 14 machine guns—one forward, the other aft—for defense. The G.IV’s success was hindered only by its low fuel capacity.

The G.IV saw service on all fronts but saw extensive action in 1917–18 along the Western Front. With increased difficulty in identifying key targets at night, the G.IV engaged in harassment bombing to add further stress to Allied soldiers. The only existing AEG. G.IV is housed in Canada’s Aviation and Space Museum and is the only example of Germany’s “night lozenge” camouflage.
