Brickmania Customs Kits

I was one of the early pioneers in creating and selling custom LEGO model kits. In March of 2000 I released my first kit: a medieval "castle" theme Blacksmith Shop. Much to my surprise this set was a hit and sold quickly. Unfortunately I was forced to retired it after only 23 examples due to a lack of available parts. Shortly thereafter I was approached by LEGO with an offer to license this kit for official production. In 2002 it was released as 3739 Blacksmith Shop and became the first ever fan-created set to be released by the company.

After selling more than 350 kits of nearly two-dozen original designs, I decided to cease Brickmania's kit production in the fall of 2003 in order to pursue other projects. Interest in my kits continued well after production ceased and I attempted to satiate that thirst with the release of a CD-ROM containing all of my building instruction in PDF format. Again to my surprise the one an only planned pressing of 500 copies sold out much faster than I expected. For the past couple years it has been available as a low-priced DVD from from A&M Productions.

In fall of 2007 I was approached by a prominent publisher to author a military modeling guide for military modeling with LEGO bricks. Work on this book project rekindled my enthusiasm for making custom kits, but I remained unsure whether or not there was enough customer interest to warrant the effort. In fall 2008 I tested the waters by introducing the Brickmania Instructions Club, which offered custom kit instructions rather than complete models. The new models' instructions generated a lot of feedback and huge quantiy of encouragement to start selling kits once again.

In March 2009 I caved into pressure from my "fans" and my own longing to get back into custom kit building. In rapid succession I released two new kits: the Fokker Dr.1 Triplane - my first World War I kit - and the Panzer IV Ausf G. tan. Response to these kits was overwhelming and both quickly sold more copies than anything I had ever released in the past. Riding high on my early success I quickly coverted my recent instruction sets into new kits, which have also been received with great enthusiasm. As of June 2009 I have decided to pick up the reigns of Brickmania as a full-time pursuit and am working on a rapid expansion of my line of custom kits and updating / re-issuing the old ones. Check the web site often becuase it will certainly be updated regularly!
